This piece is a visual representation of the struggle that began in primordial Eden and rages on to this day. The ancient tree of the knowledge of good and evil envelops us still, its greedy fingers touching and tainting everything in God’s good creation. Into this battle God sent Jesus, Who, by the power of the cross, redeems the human heart and revives His Edenic vision and power within us. We are the new headwaters; from us the seeds of His kingdom flow into all the world to challenge and change it, one person at a time.

This painting is my best attempt at capturing an angelic encounter God blessed me with many years ago. During a particularly dark and discouraging week, I fell into a tormented sleep. Sometime in the dead of night, I awoke to find myself surrounded by unnumbered angels, as though my bed was being shielded by a flurry of wings and wisps—as though the aurora borealis had settled around about me. Believe it or not, this imparted so much peace that I slipped into a delicious sleep. The next morning I rose feeling safe and secure in the arms of Jesus.

I painted this piece for my wife, Shauna, because plumeria are some of her favourite flowers.

I love these delicate and delicious blooms and their intoxicating scent. Plumeria are often featured in in leis, traditional flower garlands worn as living necklaces throughout the Hawaiian islands. May we learn to live so adorned by the Father’s favour.

I love the stubborn defiance of trees, often growing up in the most inhospitable and unlikely places, twisting and stretching to lay claim to their rightful piece of the sky. Over time, the rocks that once resisted their roots are often split by them.

When we find ourselves planted in hostile and difficult spaces, God can help thrive there. If we’re patient, He will help our roots grow deeply so we can lay claim to His blessings and best for us there.

Years ago a hot afternoon hike led me shin-deep into this magical brook at the bottom of a little canyon dividing a redwood forest. I found my soul mesmerized by dancing eddies of blues and greens, surrendering gracefully to gravity and the endless flow of cool water cascading over the stones. Jesus says His Spirit flows like a stream within us, blessing us with eternal inspiration, energy, comfort, and beauty. Let’s learn to surrender to His life-giving flow.

I painted this giant piece (the original is 4’x4′) in about a week, amidst a flurry of fiery inspiration. With every stroke of my brush, God spoke to me about the gnarled maple tree, bearing its ‘fruit,’ ablaze with His glory and goodness. Only when the work was complete did I realize that not a single leaf has fallen; the tree exists in a state of perpetual and sacred renewal, richly sustained by the cool garden where God has planted it. May we learn to live in this Edenic space, rooted in Him and His life.

I painted this piece after receiving an intriguing prophetic word.

I would be facing a season of prolonged battle, God said—but my faith would stand. I needed to hold up the shield of faith as the enemy rained down his fiery darts upon me, looking beyond the arrows to the new day God had in store for me. A new dawn awaited me… beyond the arrows.

That was January, 2020.

There are days when life feels dark and overwhelming, when the storms around us threaten and intimidate. I love this reminder that above the veil of roiling clouds, the sky is resplendent blue under a radiant sky, waiting to break through. As Calgarians are fond of saying, “If you don’t like the weather, wait fifteen minutes.” A single ray of God’s light, love, and truth can part the clouds in an instant. Hold on; the glory to be revealed will be worth it.

In the classic tale The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis, the boy Eustace is ensnared by the temptation of dragon’s gold. He falls asleep amidst his stolen treasure, awakening to discover he has become a dragon himself. Eustace languishes in his pitiful state until He encounters Aslan, the Christ-figure of Narnia, who ‘undragons’ him under the painful mercy of His lion’s claws. Each of us are cursed with a dragon’s heart too. Christ progressively frees us to enjoy the child-like glory of our true selves, as we’re found and freed in joyous friendship and surrender to Him and His cross.

I painted this after a classmate from High School passed away, succumbing to her battle with cancer. From time to time (or perhaps often!) we find ourselves weathering seasons of deep darkness and disappointment. During those times we may feel like this barren tree, aching with naked arms outstretched, longing for the full beauty and glory God has promised us. As we wait, we remind ourselves to enjoy the quiet reflections of God’s kingdom around us, knowing the best is always yet to come.
